(Tartu, Tartumaa, Estonia)

Photo of the city's observatoryIn the springtime, the climate in Tartu is warm and the days are long. This is always a good time to visit Tartu and the main tourism season really begins in April and May, when the weather starts to rapidly improve.

However, it is the mild and often hot climate of the summer that draws the biggest crowds to Tartu, when tourists can expect daytime temperatures to stay above 20°C / 68°F. The Estonian summers tend to be fairly short, with the high season falling during late June, July and August, when the daylight lasts for around 18 or 19 hours.

Seasonal Climate Variations / When to Go

Whilst it is true to say that the summer climate in Tartu brings plenty of sunshine, this is also the wettest time of the year, with precipitation levels of around 71 mm / 2.8 inches in July and 86 mm / 3.4 mm in August, compared to 23 mm / 0.9 inches in February, the driest month. Rainy weather can arrive suddenly in the summer, but rarely ruins a whole day.

Generally the low season in Tartu falls between November and March, and these chilly months can be quite dull and dark, interspersed with occasional fine days.

January and February remain covered in frost and often snow, both day and night, while March can be soggy, as everything begins to thaw.
